Tips ...
Many of you know that I used to hostess, waitress, and cocktail. It is a tough job sometimes. And because of that I am very respectful of wait staff anywhere I go. However, I am also much more aware of how it all works and what to expect.
I expect a certain level of service, regardless of the location. Be it fast food or five star foo foo, you had better have a smile and respectful/professional tone and appearance when you wait on me.
I HATE for my food to be auctioned off to me. Meaning, they can't remember who ordered what so they just call off the dish and you have to speak up for yours. Trust me, there is an easy system to remembering who ordered what. There is NO reason to auction off food.
There is also a proper way to take orders. You start with the women, and try to take the oldest woman first. And you always move clockwise.
I also hate having to pass the food around. If it is a table of 8 and hard to reach around, fine. But if there are four of us in a booth and you hand the food to the person on the outside to hand to the person on the inside, I am annoyed.
Don't act like I am a burden. It is your job to serve me. That sounds a little harsh, but it is what it is.
Don't put my bill down with my meal. Only place it on the table after you have cleared my plate and offered me dessert and a refill on my drink.
Now I know how important tips are, I have been there. And we all know the 15% guide. Here's my biggest complaint as a server and a customer. Don't tip everyone 15%! If they didn't earn it, don't give it! I mean, if those that really excel, and make your whole experience a great one, (you know, the ones you walk away from commenting about how great they were) only get your 15%, then why do the ones you roll your eyes at and even walk away feeling annoyed and disgusted with get your 15% as well? That just isn't fair to the ones who really earned it.
I once had a waitress who came to my table TWICE. Once to take our order, and once to drop it off with the bill. I was on very limited funds, but wanted to treat Corey to a special breakfast, so I ordered for him and I had coffee. My bill came to something like $6.00. The place was not even close to busy and Corey and I were very well behaved. She was short, curt, inattentive, and rude. But I left a dollar. As I was leaving I heard the hostess say here is your tip from that table, and the waitress said "That's it? Why bother?" So I turned around, walked up to her, took the dollar out of her hand and said, "Ok then, I won't." and walked out.
Tips are for people who earn them. Period. Please stop giving tips to those who didn't. Or at least stop giving them the same as you would to someone who went out of their way to give you great service.
