Happy Halloween!

Besides the usual trick or treat romp around the neighborhood, Corey and I don't usually do anything special for Halloween. So this year we decided to have fun with it.
To start things off, at work we had a pumpkin decorating contest. We were not allowed to carve or puncture the pumpkins, but everything else was game. Clay, paint, yarn, glue, etc. I was shocked with the creative entries. My competitors were things like a tea pot, erupting jiffy pop, humpty dumpty on a wall, a more than real looking blow fish, and a bottle of wine, and more. I did "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!" I took very small pumpkins and gourds and painted Charlie Brown, his sister Sally, Lucy, Woodstock and of course Snoopy. I mounted their heads on little cups and dressed them in the proper shirts made from construction paper. I was shocked at how much they looked like the characters. (Everyone knows I can NOT draw) Our Patients and Dr.'s voted. There were 15 entries. I am pleased and shocked to say that I won Third place.
Then, Corey and I decided to throw a Halloween Party for his class and a few friends. 34 to be exact. So with the help of my friend Denise, and her son Cody, we trasnformed my garage into a haunted house. I bought a black light and a fog machine. They added a strobe light. We hung black plastic bags around the entire garage from floor to ceiling. Denise and I painted things like "RUN", "HELP", and "DON'T WAKE THE MONSTER" with hand prints dragging across the bags like someone was trying to get out. We added a large spider (as big as Corey's head) on a string tided to the ceiling to fall on the kids later, and creepy music. My living room was covered in black bags as well, with decorations adorning it, the dining room, and into the laundry and bath room.
We had about 15 kids show up. Boys and girls. We played fear factor games and ate lots of Candy, cake, cupcakes, cookies, chips and soda. The fear factor games were GREAT!
1. Pop a balloon to find coins inside, the number of coins you find is the number of spiders you have to retrieve from the dish full of bug guts using only your mouth. I told the kids they were rubber spiders but after looking at the bug guts they refused to try. So I told them it was actually a vegetable in the dish. But I wouldn't tell them what. It was soo funny. They acted like they were on fear factor. Gagging, making faces, "Oh this smells sooo bad!" It was Cream of Broccoli soup folks. I was nearly peeing my pants. And Corey was the only boy to try! Three girls actually did it.
2. Chew a piece of gum, using only your mouth and the gum, transfer as many marbles as you can from one dish to the other in one minute.
3. I live across the street from a cemetery. So I planted a fake grave stone in my back yard. ( I have a very long back yard) I let the grass grow over (pretty easy, I suck at yard work anyway.) and placed pennies on the grave stone. I told the kids a story about an old ghost that will chase you if you take his money. I dared them to go get a penny. Corey went first. He came back un- harmed. Korbin was 2nd and as he reached for the penny a black object came running at him and across the back side of the yard. All the kids screamed. Korbin ran back. I told all the kids to go before the ghost came back. They all ran up there, he charged at them, they screamed and ran back to the house in a cluster. (Denise's son Cody did a great job!)
It was great. The kids had fun and so did we adults. Corey was very pleased. And that made it worth the $100.50 I spent on it.
Now, today we are eating left overs and watching movies, tonight we will trick and treat the neighborhood in rain coats and ear muffs, and will develop film from the party next week.
Happy Halloween to All, and to All a FRIGHTFUL Night!

Heavy Heart

This evening, after Corey went to bed, I went downstairs to feed our bird, Sky. I am very sad to say that Sky had passed away. She was not looking well for some time, but I was told that it was probably old age and that Parakeets only live 3-5 years. Sky was around 5.
So in the morning I need to tell my son that his first pet has died. I have placed her in a small box and will offer him the option of burying her in the back yard. And I will do my best to help him understand the cycle of life.
Not too long ago my parents had to put down our family dog, Cy. Corey handled it very well. He told us that Cy was happier now because he could see, hear, and run in heaven. I hope that he is able to accept the loss of his bird as gracefully and elegantly as he did then.
Sometimes it is very painful being a mother. This is not my favorite part.
