Corey works better alone, tends to chit-chat, and is little bit of a class clown.
The one that surprised me was "Uses effective delivery" under the speech category. I expected to see a 5 on that. So I asked the teacher, who I adore, and she said that if it was based on vocabulary alone he would have a 6 (which they are not supposed to use at this stage.) But it is also based on completing stories in a fluent manner and he tends to jump around, and seems to let his brain get ahead of his mouth.
The other thing I need to point out is that although he is getting 3's and 4's in reading, he is in the highest reading group, and is one of the only 5 kids in all three 1st grade classes to be in this group.
All in all Corey is doing well, and using the "old school" grading system he is mostly A's with a few B's.
One proud mama signing off!

Take it to the mattresses!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me say this loud and clear. I am a sweet person, with a heart of Gold. BUT DO NOT CROSS ME!
Really. You can only push me so far. If you knew my blood-line, and know my Italian upbringing, you would agree with this. Al Pacino is my mentor for crying out loud.
Yet, people constantly under estimate me. They push and push and bully and do not listen to my warnings. I tell people, "I am not as timid as I appear." They don't listen. Then they are shocked when I leave the horse head in their bed.
(OK for all of you who have not seen The Godfather, both the title of my blog and the last reference to the horse head are references from that movie. If you don't understand, then watch the movie!)
I was at work the other night, and due to a no show, there were only two of us running the store. I was alone at the register with four people in line, when a man walked in with an item off our sale table out front. He cut in front of the person I was beginning to help and this is what followed:
"I have a question."
I looked at the woman I was helping to see if she was going to be ok with me diverting my attention for a moment. Yes she was.
"Yes sir?"
"Your sign says 60% off, but your sticker on this not 60% off the original price. So is your math wrong, or is it 60% off the sticker?" He barked nice and loud, trying to impress who knows ...
"It is priced as marked sir. Only our Christmas items are 60% off, and that is not Christmas."
"Your sign just says 60% off, so you are misleading people then."
"No sir, it does say All Christmas Merchandise 60% off."
"No it doesn't, so you should have to honor the sign and sell this at 60% off the sticker."
"I am sure it states 60% off Christmas Merchandise sir."
"No it doesn't young lady, I can read!"
He was sooooooooo condescending I could not handle it.
I look at the people in line and excuse myself ...
"If you would like to follow me to the front of the store sir, I would be happy to review it with you."
"You're just gonna make an ass out of yourself. In fact you already are."
That is where he went from being on my bad side, to being on my Insulted Italian Woman side. BIG MISTAKE!
"Actually sir, I think you are helping your self with that."
I march up front, with all the other customers ordering popcorn and moving in for a closer look.
I go directly to the sign and tap my finger along the words as I slowly and loudly read the sign.
"All CHRIST-MAS MERCH-AN-DISE SIX-TY PER-CENT OFF!"
"That is not the sign I read!"
"Well sir, before you accuse me of making an ass of myself again, I am in charge of this sale section, I created the display, manage it, and posted all signs. This is the only sign with 60% off on it, and it is clearly hung over the Christmas Merchandise."
"Bitch!" And this 45+ year old man throws the product back on the table and stomps away. To which I responded very loudly ..
"Yeah, but I'm right."
I actually had the remaining customers congratulate me on my victory and how I handled him.
I am just so tired of bullies, and people who think that they can push me or people like me around. Just because I am nice, and genuinely care about others doesn't mean I will eat your crap with a grin on my face!

Stories

1.
Don't you just love modern day technology? Like the sink that turns on when you place your hands under the faucet. Or how about the toilet that flushes after you stand up and begin to leave. Yeah. How about those. I'll tell you what about those. They suck.
A. I take great care to carefully place seat covers on the toilet seat. The damn thing flushed more times than not when I turned around to drop my pants and sit. Then I have to start all over again. It becomes this little dance with the wall sensor.
B. I was quietly seated on the camode when it suddenly and randomly flushed! I will spare the details, but lets just say that with occurrences like that, they should install butt dryers in the stall too!
2.
On my way through the mall one day, I was in a bit of a rush to get to work. There was a family of 6 SLOWLY strolling through the mall in a strait line, side by side, blocking the entire path. I politely cleared my throat and said "Excuse me" as I squeezed between the wall and a boy of about 11 years of age.
The mother said in a huff "In a hurry?"
"Sorry, yes I am." I respond as I pick up my pace.
"How rude!" she dared to snort.
I couldn't handle it. I stopped, turned around, calmly and directly stated in the same way a teacher would present the morning lesson ... "Actually, RUDE is a group of 6 people walking side by side at a snails pace, selfishly blocking the way for anyone behind them that may actually have a schedule or purpose in where they are going."
3.
Northland Gifts moved their store to another mall. Which meant packing very expensive collectibles and glass figurines. Hours of pains taking work. We placed a large sign in front of the door that clearly read "CLOSED! We are moving to ... Please come visit us there after January 5th." Now we foolishly thought that this, in combination with seeing 5 woman in jeans and T-shirts packing boxes, and half the merchandise missing would be enough to detour browsers. Uh wrong!
When we had to leave the door open for the movers to remove all the large display cases, more than 17 people walked in and began to try to shop. "I am sorry, we're closed."
"You are?" they ALL asked, shocked.
"Yes, like the sign says, we're moving."
"Oh, you are?"
And when we had the glass door closed, people would read the sign and either
A. Try to open the door
B. Knock on it and ask us when we were going to open and would it be later that day. "Actually, like the sign says, we're moving out of this store, into another, and will be open after January 5th."
C. Knock on the door and ask if we were closed.

People and Technology! Always an adventure!

Holiday Rush Re-hab ...

Ok, so now that I am out of Retail Re-hab for Holiday Employees, I have a little more time to update my blog.
First, thanks to a snow and ice storm that was the worst this area has seen in like 30 years, I got to spend a little extra time with Corey before he went back to school. I went from a place that had smog day alerts, to a place that had snow days activated.
I do not drive in the snow, and God made sure of it, when for no apparent reason the windshield wipers blew a fuse and I was forced to ride the bus to work a few times.
This is not new to me, and in fact, when looking for a place to live, I now make sure that it is close to a bus stop as I have found myself needing a ride upon several occasions over the last 5 years. However, hiking through the snow, slipping on ice, and feeling my breath freeze to my face, while waiting to be accosted by strange people on the bus is a new twist.
Corey is doing great. He is so smart and funny. He really is. Any of you who have sat and had a conversation with him know this. People often say he is 6 going on 30. His whit and humor is advanced for his age. The benefits of being raised as an only child of a whitty and smart allelic mother I suppose. He constantly surprises me. Like yesterday morning he came in to wake me up. I said I needed a few minutes to wake up and asked him to read a book while he waited. He went into his room, got a book, then proceeded to read it out loud to me. Not a little toddler book. But one that is meant to be read to him, as it is at the second to third grade level. I almost fell out of bed. He brought home a math "test" where he had to do 96 problems in 5 minutes. He did them all with only 1 error. I am in so much trouble when he gets to the third grade and starts algebra. That's right, third grade. Stuff I know that I did not learn until 5th grade. Truthfully, they began teaching it in the 5th, but I didn't start understanding it until 6th and 7th. Math and I do not get along.
Milo is doing well. He just turned 1 year old and has cut down on his chewing up our things. Still not great, but a lot better than it was. He went on a real destructive chew fest for a while there. But any idea of tossing him out was dropped every time that dog ran to Corey, put his paws up on his shoulders, and snuggled his neck. That was his get out of jail free card everytime. Think he knows it?
I am now back on the job hunt, as I am down to 20 hours a week or so. I have to say, much to my surprise, that with exception of working evenings (thus being away from Corey) and the fact that it doesn't pay squat, I really like retail. Nice verity. Nothing is mundane or repetitive. Constant change. A great pace. I like it. Too bad it doesn't meet the bills.
So that is all for now folks. I have been saving up stories, but thought you would appreciate an update first.
